I’ve seen this picture in several different places but I just need to talk about it for a minute because it’s one of my favourite shots of battlestar characters and I think there’s so much here that encompasses the show.
We’ve got Adama and Lee in the foreground but they’re not facing the camera straight on and they’re standing at ease. Now look at how Starbuck and Sharon are standing: feet planted, shoulders back, hands at the waist. Everything about them is strong and assertive. While Adama and Lee may be face of the military, it’s these two female viper pilots who are the muscle, holding the front line.
And that’s what I love about this show. We get Laura Roslin as President of colonies holding the power from a political and civilian standpoint but we also get Starbuck and Sharon as two of the soldiers, risking their lives daily in the hardest and most dangerous job on the ship.
Everything here just looks so natural and it’s a perfect example of how BSG has strong female characters in every facet of life on Galactica without reservation. Dee, Cally, Starbuck and Tory all have incredibly different jobs that are a huge part of their identities without determining their character or femininity. Or take the Sixes who are intentionally a sex symbol as well as some of the strongest and most complex characters in the show. This is a tv show filled with women and every single one of them is a complex, autonomous, human being.
Some days I just feel like everyone needs to take a moment to reflect on battlestar galactica and consider how much better life would be if all writers learned a thing or two from it.
